Family, friends, and Hollywood notables gathered last Saturday, January 28th, for Etta James’ funeral, held at The City of Refuge church pastored by the internationally known Bishop Noel Jones. Christina Aguilera (along with Stevie Wonder) and others celebrated the Queen of Blues’s life with musical tributes to honor her namesake.
The Reverand Al Sharpton conducted the services and spoke candidly about what Etta’s life should mean to us.
“The genius of Etta James is she flipped the script,” he said. ”Etta James helped break down the culture curtain of America before the Civil Rights Act of 1964……She was able to get us to sing the same rhythms and melodies … Humming the same ballads and understanding each other’s melodies way before we could even use the same hotels,” Sharpton continues.
Aguilera acknowledged James as “the [singer] that cut right to my soul and spoke to me,” before she belted out one of James’ famous hits, “At Last.”
